Principles of Problem Solving Course

This course is designed to help you solve climbing moves faster, understand your own climbing better, and have more fun.

It offers all the greatest hits of Coach Jesse Firestone’s technical and tactical coaching concepts in one place, with photos and videos.

When is it?

  • Session 1: December 14th at 10am PT

  • Session 2: December 21st at 10am PT

These sessions will be recorded with recordings available to registrants.

Who is it for?

These ideas will be valuable for anyone from beginner to expert, but having at least a few years of climbing practice will help you understand the basic building blocks of technique we’ll use in the course.

How is it delivered?

The course will be delivered interactively over 2 Zoom sessions. You will also get a cheat sheet of the concepts we discuss in the class, clear takeaways on how to improve on all the different areas we talk about, and a recording of the course to rewatch in the future.

Goals of the course:

  • Solve climbing moves better and faster

    • Learn the underlying logic of why some techniques work

    • Apply this logic both intuitively and analytically to new moves

  • Understand your own climbing better

    • Get better feedback from your body (form a better mind-body connection)

    • Improve your ability to understand what’s happening when other people climb, or when you watch your own video

    • Have clearer language to talk about climbing movement with others

  • Have more fun

    • Understand the role of frustration, fear and other negative emotions in the problem-solving process

    • Learn tools to consciously work through problems on and off the wall

It was extremely helpful for Jesse to break down some of his principles around how to achieve greater stability and balance through stable triangles and better use of all your limbs as points of contact. Having climbed for over 20 years, I often find myself resorting to ingrained movement patterns with useless limbs and an over-reliance on power.

Engaging with Jesse through this training has given me much more food for thought on how to apply these principles to my climbing. Also through the session, Jesse helps provide a common framework for climbing movement and positions so that climbers can communicate more effectively about getting better at climbing!

I usually climb and feel out positions and movement using intuitive body awareness. Jesse’s movement course helped me understand the why behind my intuition and gave me the language to analyze and improve my climbing with more intention.

Jesse’s Principles of Problem Solving was laid out in a way that made sense and gave easy, actionable items that climbers can work on in their own training. It was great for revisiting the basic building blocks of movement.

Jesse’s course allows one to understand fundamental movement concepts in play when climbing and why certain positions work better than others. The course also introduces anatomy concepts and language associated with climbing. This not only allows for a deeper understanding of movement on the wall but also allows for more precise discussions with others, leading to an increased awareness of intricate body position details.

Especially recommended for analytical people wanting to geek out on the nuances of climbing movement.

The technique course is sick! It’s allowing me to connect a lot of dots.
